NAPLAN is coming up, and the school chat groups are starting to hum. So let's talk plainly about what it is, what it isn't, and the four things that actually help your child.
What NAPLAN is
NAPLAN tests reading, writing, numeracy, and (in some years) language conventions. It's designed to compare schools, not children. The results come back as a school-wide summary.
Your individual child's NAPLAN result doesn't follow them around. It doesn't go on their high school application. It isn't a measure of how clever they are.
What NAPLAN isn't
It isn't a moment of truth. It's a snapshot, taken on one day, of one part of what your child is learning.
If they have a bad morning, the result reflects the morning, not the year.
The four things that actually help
Based on what we've seen across our NAPLAN prep programs over the years:
1. Sleep. Tired children underperform by 10–20% on standardised tests. Two weeks of solid sleep before NAPLAN helps more than a single prep session.
2. A calm breakfast. Hungry children are anxious children. Protein + slow-release carbs. Skip the sugary cereal.
3. Familiar practice, not new content. Doing five NAPLAN-style practice papers at the kitchen table is more useful than learning a new topic the night before. The test format itself is unfamiliar — that's the friction, not the maths or English.
4. One reassuring conversation. Tell your child: "This is one test on one day. You don't have to be perfect. You just have to try." That sentence, said once, lowers test anxiety measurably.
If you want to do more
Our holiday NAPLAN prep programs run in the week before Term 2 (for Year 3 and Year 5). Two days, small groups, familiar format, no stress. We give kids the chance to see what the test looks like before the day arrives.
Bookings open about six weeks before each holiday. We send a reminder to families on our list — message us on WhatsApp to be included.
